Parliamentary Policies in Security Sector Reform Conference Held in Vienna, Austria

Security Sector Reform Working Group

Vienna, Austria, 29 September 2022 - The PfP Consortium Security Sector Reform Working Group, in partnership with the Geneva Center for Security Sector Governance (DCAF), sponsored a working conference titled “Strengthening the Role of Parliament in the Governance and Oversight of the Security Sector,” which was hosted by the Austrian National Defense Academy in Vienna 28-29 September.

The objective was to foster discussion among policy makers from across Europe. The event featured parliamentary level representatives and staffers or experts from Germany, Austria, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Romania, Georgia, Moldova, Switzerland, Tajikistan, Ukraine, and the United Kingdom. The topics included the role of parliament in law enforcement reform, defense reform, emerging security threats-cybersecurity governance.

There was also a round table discussion wherein each delegation presented key priorities for security sector governance and oversight. The group will draft and publish key policy recommendations based on these discussions through a partnership with the Austrian National Defence Academy’s publishing division.
