This commentary presents nine options for consideration by policymakers when designing strategies to mitigate transnational asymmetric terrorism (TAT) within a framework of acceptable losses and sustainable costs.

Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany (June 10, 2016) – Experts from a broad spectrum of society came together at the George C. Marshall Center from 1-3 June to discuss security challenges related to the European migration crisis, including  facilitating travel by foreign terrorist fighters to Europe and North America.  They shared perspectives and challenged conventional practices to produce a draft set of policy recommendations on how to best respond to the current international security environment.

Ankara, Turkey (October 19, 2015) – As participants were preparing for a NATO Centre of Excellence Defence Against Terrorism (COE-DAT) conference held from 13-15 October in Ankara, they could not have imagined the tragic terrorist attack that would darken the city on 10 October, killing approximately 100, and injuring almost 300. The COE-DAT conference was a somber reminder of the need for nations to unite in the fight against violent extremism.
